Treasure Boxes

Friday's Special Concert

We have been looking carefully at shapes. We can name them and talk about some of the special things about shapes that we notice.

Carter made a cube, a pyramid and a box shape ( rectangular prism).

Tyler used six triangles to make these diamond shapes.

Jessica also used six triangles. Her shapes are hexagons.

Elle-Rose made a tower of cubes. How many more does she need to make to make the tower as tall as she is?

Evaporation

We wondered if clouds were white because of salt from the sea. We know that sea water evaporates and the water vapour goes up and makes clouds, but when we taste the rain it isn't salty. Does the salt stay in the cloud and make it white?

We mixed salt and water until all the salt dissolved. We couldn't see it in the water but we knew it was still there because we tasted it. Yuk!

We poured the salty water onto a plate and left it on the bench.

We didn't see any water vapour in our room, but the water disappeared and we were left with this...

At first we thought it was ice, but it wasn't. It was salt. The water evaporated but the salt stayed behind.

The salt doesn't go up to the clouds.

Great writing Mika!

Rainbow Hands

Rainbow Hands on PhotoPeach

Types of Clouds

We made a cloud in a bottle.
We made a cloud in a bottle. We put water in the bottle and then dropped in a lit match. We quickly put on the lid. We squeezed the bottle hard and then released it. What happened? A cloud appeared when you release and disappeared when you squeezed.
EXPLANATION:
Water vapour can be made to condense into the form of small cloud droplets.  Adding particles such as the smoke helps the process of water condensation and squeezing the bottle causes the air pressure to drop. This creates a cloud!

We found some information on different types of clouds.

We made a picture showing thin whispy clouds (Cirrus), Grey blanket clouds (Stratus), puffy white clouds (cumulus)  and big storm clouds (cumulonimbus).

Taking the temperature.

We had three cups. One with ice, one with cold water and one with hot water.

We put the thermometer in the cup and looked carefully at what happened.

We drew the cups and recorded the temperature.

Now we know how to use a thermometer. We will be able to measure how hot it is each day.

Rainbows

We used prisms and mirrors and a bright light to make a rainbow. Can you see it shining on the wall? The light went in white and came out seven colours. When we see a raibow in the sky the sun is the light and the raindrops are the prism.

Vehicle Designers

These boys were very busy creating vehicles. They wanted to show everyone their designs.
