Legends of New Zealand

Maui pulled up New Zealand with the jawbone.  The brothers turned into stone, and then they turned into mountains.
By Brendan

Maui went out to catch New Zealand. He caught New Zealand and he stood on New Zealand. He got stuck on a rock. He got frozen. He made the sun go slowly because the sun boomed.
By Riley

Rangi and Papa were too close together. The children tried to push them apart. They didn’t want them to be apart because they loved each other. The children did move them apart. Then Papa cried because she wanted to be with her true love.
By Dyarviarhnne

Rangi the sky father and Papa the earth mother were too close together so their kids pushed them apart. Maui and his brothers went out to sea. Maui got out his magic jawbone from his grandmother. He put it on his fishing rod and cast it into the water. He caught a humungous fish. When Maui stepped on it, it became land with trees and grass and hill and beaches with sand.
By Molly

Once upon a time four boys went in a canoe far far far away to the sea. Then they picked up New Zealand. Then they turned into stone.
By Luke

Maui got the north Island then he stepped on the North Island. Then all the trees and grass grew straight away.
By Logan

Rangi and Papa were too close together so their children tried to push them apart. They managed to. Maui told his brothers to take him out fishing. Maui fished up New Zealand. His brothers went out. They got stuck on a rock for a very long time so they turned into stone. So they remain to this day as a very high mountain. The highest mountain was standing.
By Liam

Rangi and Papa lived together. The children tried to push them away. Rangi is the sky and Papa is the earth mother. Maui stole a jawbone from his grandmother and used it as a fishing rod. He caught a big fish and made New Zealand. He made the North Island then he made the South Island. The fish looked like a big stingray. When he got off the boat it got trees.

Maui pulled up the land with a jawbone.
By Elle-Rose

The Earth mother and Rangi were too close together so the children pushed them. Maui and his brothers went out. He got his jaw. He threw it in the sea. He brought up New Zealand. They got stuck on a rock. They climbed on to the boat and they turned to stone.
By Jessica

Rangi and Papa were too close together. The children pushed them. They didn’t want to break. They loved each other. There was a magic jawbone. Maui used it for a hook. He caught a big, big fish that was the North Island of New Zealand. When he stepped on it the trees grew and the bushes flowered. There was a city. It was Auckland.
By Ava

Maui pulled New Zealand up. Maui had a waka.

Scientists

We were scientists when we experimented during science week.

Scientists work together. They measure carefully.

Scientists observe what is happening and talk about why it is  happening.
The oil and the water don't mix together. Everytime we shake it the water goes to the bottom and the oil stays on the top.

We put fizzy tablets into our bottles. The tablets made the bubbles of carbon dioxide. The coloured bubbles floated up through the oil like blobs of lava.  We made lava in bottles.
