Maui pulled up New Zealand with
the jawbone. The brothers turned into
stone, and then they turned into mountains.

Maui went out to catch New
Zealand. He caught New Zealand and he stood on New Zealand. He got stuck on a
rock. He got frozen. He made the sun go slowly because the sun boomed.

together. The children tried to push them apart. They didn’t want them to be
apart because they loved each other. The children did move them apart. Then
Papa cried because she wanted to be with her true love.

Rangi the sky father and Papa the
earth mother were too close together so their kids pushed them apart. Maui and
his brothers went out to sea. Maui got out his magic jawbone from his
grandmother. He put it on his fishing rod and cast it into the water. He caught
a humungous fish. When Maui stepped on it, it became land with trees and grass
and hill and beaches with sand.

stone. So they remain to this day as a very high mountain. The highest mountain
