Treasure Boxes

Friday's Special Concert

We have been looking carefully at shapes. We can name them and talk about some of the special things about shapes that we notice.

Carter made a cube, a pyramid and a box shape ( rectangular prism).

Tyler used six triangles to make these diamond shapes.

Jessica also used six triangles. Her shapes are hexagons.

Elle-Rose made a tower of cubes. How many more does she need to make to make the tower as tall as she is?

Evaporation

We wondered if clouds were white because of salt from the sea. We know that sea water evaporates and the water vapour goes up and makes clouds, but when we taste the rain it isn't salty. Does the salt stay in the cloud and make it white?

We mixed salt and water until all the salt dissolved. We couldn't see it in the water but we knew it was still there because we tasted it. Yuk!

We poured the salty water onto a plate and left it on the bench.

We didn't see any water vapour in our room, but the water disappeared and we were left with this...

At first we thought it was ice, but it wasn't. It was salt. The water evaporated but the salt stayed behind.

The salt doesn't go up to the clouds.

Great writing Mika!

Types of Clouds

We made a cloud in a bottle.
We made a cloud in a bottle. We put water in the bottle and then dropped in a lit match. We quickly put on the lid. We squeezed the bottle hard and then released it. What happened? A cloud appeared when you release and disappeared when you squeezed.
EXPLANATION:
Water vapour can be made to condense into the form of small cloud droplets.  Adding particles such as the smoke helps the process of water condensation and squeezing the bottle causes the air pressure to drop. This creates a cloud!

We found some information on different types of clouds.

We made a picture showing thin whispy clouds (Cirrus), Grey blanket clouds (Stratus), puffy white clouds (cumulus)  and big storm clouds (cumulonimbus).

Taking the temperature.

We had three cups. One with ice, one with cold water and one with hot water.

We put the thermometer in the cup and looked carefully at what happened.

We drew the cups and recorded the temperature.

Now we know how to use a thermometer. We will be able to measure how hot it is each day.

Rainbows

We used prisms and mirrors and a bright light to make a rainbow. Can you see it shining on the wall? The light went in white and came out seven colours. When we see a raibow in the sky the sun is the light and the raindrops are the prism.

Vehicle Designers

These boys were very busy creating vehicles. They wanted to show everyone their designs.

A Lion in the Night by Pamela Allen

We read the story "A Lion in the night." We made maps to show where the lion went. We made up a story and our partner had to move the lion.

Here is a map of the lion's journey.
Luke gave the instructions and Carter followed them.

Logan and Darviarhnne planned their journey.

Tyler looked at the card carefully before he told Jason what to do.

Zion and Jodeci made a wonderful map.

Riley and Brendan worked together to show the lion's journey.

Jessica and Elle -Rose took turns giving instructions.

Visiting Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve

We went on our trip. It was called Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. We walked on a very leafy pathway. We saw a waterfall that was on our Bingo. We saw an 800 year old rimu tree. We walked up a lot of stairs.
By Ava

Yesterday we went to Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. We had a sheet of bingo. We had teams for looking for leaves. We found a tree. We gathered Room 1 to get around the tree.
By Tyler

We went to the awesome Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. The trees were so big, especially the really, really big rimu! When I looked closely at the big rimu I could see a big fat kereru! It made a funny noise. Every person gets a bingo sheet. In my team Molly won.

We went to Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. It was so much fun. We found 80 Skeleton leaves. Oho, I don’t want to fall in the water when we go to the water fall. At the waterfall we played pooh sticks like Winnie the Pooh. From the waterfall there were about 100 steps to get to the start again. Then we came back to school.
By Molly

We went to Otari- Wilton on the bus. It was very fun on the bus. I saw heaps of stones. I saw a place where my brother went for a wedding. In the trees I saw a kereru with a funny tummy. It had a white tummy. We went on the track. We came to a picnic place. We went on a bench. We went up to the 800 year old Rimu tree. then we went back to the bus. It was a busy day.

I saw the kereru at Otari-Wilton and I saw the beautiful flower.

At Otari-Wilton Reserve we had to walk on very, very high steps.I saw the waterfall. It was full of water. I love the beautiful plants and insects. At the time we had to go to the bus and then we went to school.

By Carter

We went to Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. There were lots of beautiful leaves. I found a spiky leaf and it was browny red. There were work sheets for every child in the top block. There was bingo and I was the first to get bingo. We were going to see the 800 year old rimu but we got too tired.
By Logan

On Tuesday we went to Otari-Wilton Bush Reserve. It was so cool with Logan and my mum. I saw a beautiful leaf. It was spiky and yellow. I liked the game of I Spy Bingo.

Netbook Research

Dyarviarhnne and Jodeci were finding out about wetas.

Luke and Ashton found out that geckos live in the bush and eat bugs.

Jake and Liam saw a tuatara eating a baby bird. They discovered that tuatara live in holes.

Zion and Roshni were looking for information about the gecko's habitat.

Molly and Ella drew a detailed diagram of a gecko. They could even see the scales and the gecko's ear.

Ava and Jessica found out that skinks like to live under logs and they like to sit on rocks too.

Brendan, Riley and Kyle saw a picture where a weta was eating a carrot! Weta like to live in little dark holes.

Carter and Logan found out that tuatara live in places with ferns and rocks. They like to eat weta.

Mika and Jason found out that tuatara eat moths and spiders. They don't like people.

Tyler looked at lots of tuatara pictures. He saw that they had lots of spikes on their backs.
