Our mokomoko

We made our own mokomoko out of salt dough. We baked them in the oven. We looked at some pictures of mokomoko and then we painted them carefully to show the patterns on their skin. Mokomoko on PhotoPeach

More About our Beans

On Monday we saw that a stem was growing up and it
had a little leaf.
On Tuesday the stem and the leaves had grown above the soil.

We could see the little leaves starting to open up.
On Wednesday we measured how tall the tallest bean was. It was nearly 9 blocks high.

On Thursday we measured the bean again. This time it was more than 10 blocks high.
How much has it grown in one day?

We will keep on measuring our beans. I wonder how high they will grow?

Fractions

Ava has a pizza. It is cut into 9 pieces that are the same size.

How much of the pizza does Ava have?

One ninth

Elle-Rose has a whole pizza.

She broke it into two pieces the same size.
She has two halves.

We cut our shapes into quarters. That means that we have four pieces the same size.

We checked that we had quarters.
Yes we do, they are all the same size.

Green Thumbs

We were on duty for Green thumbs this week. We looked at the vege gardens and decided they needed to be weeded. We had to look carefully to see what we needed to pull out. We pulled out the plants we didn't want in our gardens. We had to dig under the plant so we could pull out the roots too. If we leave the roots they might grow again. We will plant some veges when it gets a bit warmer in the Spring.

We made sure we pulled out the roots.

We had to look carefully to pull out the weeds and not the strawberry plants.

We found lots of worms but we left them in the garden. They help to keep the soil healthy.

Good job Room 3. We know how to be kaitaki and look after our school.

Growing Beans

On Monday we looked at our bean seeds. They had grown something. Molly's bean had something at the top and Elle-Rose's bean had something at the bottom. They looked like this ...

We thought it might be a root, but roots go down into the ground. On Wednesday we looked again.
Carter's bean had grown a long white bit. It was going down. Is it a root?

On Friday we looked at Jason's bean. Wow, it had lots of white bits going down. They do look like roots now. And what is that curly bit growing out the top?

Keep looking at our bean seeds. I wonder what will happen next?!

Trees Around Our School

We have lots of pohutukawa trees. They have rough bark. They have red flowers at Christmas time.

There are some cabbage trees at our school. The Maori name is ti kouka. They have tough leaves that are long and skinny like flax leaves.

The kowhai tree has lots of little leaves and yellow flowers. It will get the flowers soon and the tui will come and drink the nectar.

The punga is a tree fern. It grows quite tall. The underneath of the leaf is silver. The All Blacks wear the silver fern on their jersey.
